What Is Shirodhara?

Shirodhara is one of the great rejuvenation therapies of Ayurveda. A very simple and relaxing treatment, it is one of the best known therapies for calming and grounding the nervous system. During this treatment, you will lie on a comfortable massage table with your head slightly tilted back. A continuous stream of warm oil flows over the center of the forehead for 20 to 25 minutes. Our premium ShiroBliss shirodhara systems ensure the most seamless, effective and blissful therapy. The entire session lasts about 50 minutes, including a brief head massage and rest time following the treatment.

NOTE: Many people experience immediate results. For others who are tightly wound, a series of treatments will provide better results!

Abhyanga: Ayurvedic Oil Massage

For the deepest relaxation, you may wish to add a full-body 30-minute oil massage to your shirodhara session. Called Abhyanga in Ayurveda, this type of massage is specifically designed to help the body release toxins. Deep tissue massage and lymphatic drainage also available.

Meet Olivia Fried

img_0037-full-resOlivia Fried, a licensed massage therapist, will be working at Mitchell Chiropractic Healing Center on Wednesdays, 1 to 6 p.m. to offer Shirodhara and Ayurvedic massage. Olivia studied in the School of Ayurveda with eminent teachers including Drs. Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Claudia Welch, John Douillard and Junil Joshi. After completion of the two-year, 760 hour certification program, Olivia graduated in 2009 as an Ayurvedic Practitioner. She left the corporate world in 2013 to attend The Healing Arts and Massage School and fully dedicate her time to helping others achieve a life of wellness. Most recently, Olivia has studied Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

Preparing for a Shirodhara Relaxation Treatment

  • Plan to wear an old T-shirt and shorts or sweats — in case a little oil gets on them. It’s possible for some oil to drip from your hair after shirodhara. And if you have an oil massage in advance, you’ll leave with some residue of oil on your skin.
  • After the treatment, keep direct sunlight off the head and avoid becoming overheated in hot weather.  If you are in the sun, wear a hat or head covering to prevent the direct sunlight from hitting the head.  Overexposure to sun or heat may cause a headache.
  • If it is winter or cold when you receive your treatment, make sure to wear a head wrap or hat to keep the cold air off the head when you leave the treatment. The cold air can cause the head to become chilled, making it much easier to catch a cold. You may want a head wrap in any event to keep oil from dripping into your eyes or on your clothes.
  • Allow the oil to remain in your hair for the remainder of the day if possible. If not, please keep the oil in the hair for at least 1 hour after the treatment. It will continue to moisturize the scalp, which is calming for the nervous system.
  • To receive maximum benefits, plan to have a quiet, relaxing day or evening following the treatment. Avoid strenuous activity and stressful situations. Avoid your smart phone, computer, radio, TV, and other media time as such stimulation will undermine the value of the experience and may cause stress after the soothing treatment you’ve experienced.
