{"id":3151,"date":"2018-08-13T12:22:01","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T12:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/radianthealth.us\/2018\/08\/13\/is-it-better-to-walk-or-run\/"},"modified":"2018-08-13T12:22:01","modified_gmt":"2018-08-13T12:22:01","slug":"is-it-better-to-walk-or-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radianthealth.us\/es\/2018\/08\/13\/is-it-better-to-walk-or-run\/","title":{"rendered":"Is It Better To Walk Or Run?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-544 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/radianthealth.us\/files\/2018\/08\/running-resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>There\u2019s a lively debate between walking and running fanatics about which one\u2019s better, with people arguing passionately on both sides of the issue.<\/p>\n<p>While there\u2019s evidence supporting both arguments, we like James O\u2019Keefe\u2019s opinion.\u00a0 It matters because he\u2019s done both, and having tried both, has ultimately settled on the walking side of the debate.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Keefe is a cardiologist and a self-described exercise enthusiast, who used to spend several hours a day running and working out.\u00a0 After a period of intensive research on the long-term effects of intense physical activity on the heart and body, he decided to trade in his running shoes for a comfortable pair of walking shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that running doesn\u2019t actually improve your mortality rate, while walking 1-2.5 hours a week can lower your risk of death by up to 25 percent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As O\u2019keefe explains:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not meant for sustained levels of exercise for long periods of time.\u00a0 After 60 minutes of intense physical activity, like running, the chambers of your heart begin to stretch and overwhelm the muscle\u2019s ability to adapt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It gets worse.\u00a0 Over the longer terms, intense training can permanently damage your heart, because the increased blood flow to your heart leads to microtears.\u00a0 If you only run occasionally, that\u2019s not a huge deal, because they heal after a few days. If you do it repeatedly and over a long period of time, it can cause scarring in the heart that can accelerate aging.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but excessive endurance training can also short circuit your immune system, making it more likely that you\u2019ll get sick.\u00a0 It sounds counterintuitive, but it\u2019s true!<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is, while there\u2019s no doubt that exercise is good for you, too much of a good thing can turn into a bad thing.\u00a0 As ever, moderation is the key.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-544 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/radianthealth.us\/files\/2018\/08\/running-resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>There\u2019s a lively debate between walking and running fanatics about which one\u2019s better, with people arguing passionately on both sides of the issue.
